An Italian Wars game featuring my Neapolitan army against Simon's Huguenot's. I was going to use the army for the club ADLG-R competition but didn't in the end enter so thought I'd see how it might have done.
I tried to pick an 'unusual' composition with a Strategist, two Brilliant commanders, a large number of mounted troops and a substantial force of terrain troops plus some fortifications. The idea had been to attack down one flank with one command flank marching. Unfortunately I'd forgotten this when we deployed!
The Huguenots have a substantial body of heavy foot with Reiters and Gendarmes in support. The Neapolitan terrain troops rush forward to claim the right flank while massed Gendarme's await action in the centre:
The Huguenots push forward their own mounted:
Theoretically Neapolitan swordsmen and crossbowmen should make short work of the Huguenot crossbowmen even though they are uphill:
Gendarmes and Reiters clash! Being better in combat and having an overlap this should go well:
Swordsmen attack the crossbowmen on the hill while the Neapolitan crossbowmen outflank their opponents:
That didn't go too well, lost a mounted arquebusier base and took a hit on the Gendarmes:
The Huguenot Gendarmes join in the massed mounted battle:
On the hill the Neapolitan swordsmen have fled from the Huguenot crossbowmen:
The cavalry battle continues with infantry ominously moving up to help out the Huguenots mounted:
In the centre massed Landsknechts approach the very thinly held Neapolitan centre:
The cavalry battle on with both sides taking hits:
The battle reaches crisis point:
Gendarmes clear away the opposition:
Landsknechts and Gendarmes clash:
Arquebusiers hold the fortifications. In the distance the Huguenot camp is sacked giving a narrow victory to the Neapolitans:
The army composition was certainly different and kept much of Simon's heavy foot out of the game. For a long time at the start it looked like the Neapolitans would be driven off easily but gradually they came back into the game and pulled off a narrow win in the end. I think it would have been fun to use in the competition and for the first game at least would give opponents a bit of a shock!
