ADLG Hussites v Medieval Germans

Last night's game was another ADLG with my Hussites facing Stan's Medieval Germans.

The Hussites were originally part of my Lithuanian DBM army which was one of my favourite DBM armies. Unfortunately they are not a very effective ADLG army but they do look nice!

The terrain fell out well for the Hussites with an impassable lake to anchor one flank on. The Hussites deployed their wagon Laager against the lake and sent their cavalry on a flank march to the right to hopefully catch the German baggage undefended:

The Germans advanced towards the Laager across the board. The marsh on the right stopped them moving forward in a single line. Having figured out that the Hussite flank march was about to arrive the German knights are redeploying in the background but will take a while to get there:

The flank march arrives! It looks like the German camp and levies are at their mercy:

The German centre continues to advance. The German left has been slowed by their need to attempt to deal with the Hussite flank march while on the Hussite left wagons have advanced to flank the German attack:

The flank march gets into action quickly:

The German infantry are almost ready to attack the Laager. They have taken a few hits but are basically intact. One Hussite infantry unit has foolishly left the Laager to try to slow the Germans down but this has stopped the Hussites being able to fire at the engaged German pikemen:

The flank march has captured the German baggage and is well on the way to destroying the German levies. The approaching German knights won't be so easy to deal with though:

Initially at least the attack on the Laager is held off but the wagons are very weak in combat:

The tide starts to turn though and the wagons take losses from the German foot with some German foot knights joining the attack on the Hussite right:

On the Hussite left a wagon is destroyed but this allows the supporting Hussite foot to charge into the weakened German pikemen destroying one group and flanking another:

The Germans have now taken a lot of losses, mostly in supporting troops and the camp. The right of the Hussite Laager has been taken and the flank march Hussite cavalry are now struggling against the German knights:

With German morale close to collapsing the Hussite cavalry manage to gang up on a single German knight who had advanced a little too far, destroying it and winning the game for the Hussites:

Everything went well for the Hussites in this game. The lake gave them a flank to anchor on, the marsh in the centre broke up the German attack and the Hussite flank march arrived as quickly as they could in a great place to inflict a lot of damage on the German's weaker troops.

Even so it was a close run thing. The war wagons seem to me to be very weak, they can't move and shoot, they are hard to move at all and they are abysmal fighting infantry. They are good against mounted but can't contact them and mounted can always dismount against them anyway. A screen of light infantry in front of opposition foot easily takes care of the wagon's shooting and once the enemy foot get in the wagons go down quickly.

I certainly wouldn't want to use them often but they do look great. Perhaps picking fewer wagons and/or artillery, more infantry and adopting a less Laager orientated approach might be a different way to use them next time?
